中醫與勃起功能障礙
勃起功能障礙（ED）是一種令人身心困擾的病症，會大大降低患者的生活質素。中醫處理這類病症的症狀已有數千年經驗。約5000年前的傳說帝王神農，是首位在其著作《神農本草經》中記載ED治療的人（1）。他特別記述了不同種類的人參治療ED的功效，而這一點近年已獲現代科學證實（1）。
ED的成因及治療方法眾多。過去十年曾使用過多種不同藥物，治療效果參差，但大多與嚴重副作用有關，包括頭痛、面部潮紅、肌肉痛及消化不良（2）。因此，雖然草藥產品需求殷切，但證實這類治療功效的研究才剛開始出現。
目前唯一一篇有關中草藥（CHM）與ED的系統性綜述涵蓋了2253名病人。分析結果看來相當正面，中草藥結合西醫治療有顯著的治癒率，包括勃起質量評分、勃起角度及恢復時間均有改善。綜述的結論是中草藥優於對照組，但由於研究質素偏低，因此未能作出推薦，需要更嚴謹的研究才能作出這種程度的推薦（3）。
亦有多項研究探討中草藥治療勃起功能障礙的成效。其中較值得注意的包括「SA1」等方劑：在小鼠身上，SA1令爬跨潛伏期及插入潛伏期縮短、射精潛伏期延長及爬跨次數增加，另有其他益處。研究認為這些結果顯示SA1能改善性活動及勃起功能（4）。Sheng Li膠囊縮短了交配潛伏期（由相遇到交配的時間），加快了勃起出現的速度，並阻止精囊萎縮。研究的結論是SA1能提升性慾、增加勃起次數並改善性表現（5）。
據報道，Erdi BieJia Tang在60名人類受試者身上有效，其有效率在統計學上顯著高於對照組，且無副作用（6）。值得注意的是，這項研究中所有入選的受試者，都有中醫診斷的腎陰虛。Yangjingjiaonang亦顯示出成效（7）。Yi Mu Sa Ke方亦然，並且對早洩亦有改善（16）。
亦有研究探討中草藥與ED及特定病症的關係。以下我想介紹其中幾項值得注意的研究。
高膽固醇
眾所周知，高膽固醇可導致勃起功能障礙（ED）（8）。在一項研究高膽固醇大鼠ED的實驗中，研究發現中草藥能顯著改善勃起功能；雖然草藥並未改變膽固醇水平，但研究認為草藥保護了平滑肌及相關細胞，使其免受膽固醇影響（9）。
前列腺炎
研究顯示，名為Hua fen qi nu tang的方劑及Xuan Ju膠囊不僅有助前列腺炎患者的勃起功能障礙康復，對前列腺炎本身亦有治療作用（11,12, 18）
糖尿病
草藥杜仲（eucommia ulmoides oliv，DuZhong）減輕了有髓神經纖維的損傷，並強化陰莖組織，改善糖尿病大鼠的勃起功能障礙（13）。這種常用草藥能防止陰莖組織內的神經纖維出現排列紊亂及退化，而對照組則出現了這些情況。它亦能阻止髓鞘板層分裂（13）。另一常用的中藥方劑「六味地黃丸」，眾所周知對糖尿病相關病症有幫助。在一項研究中，服用此方的糖尿病小鼠，其性喚起、勃起及射精功能均有所改善。此方的治療作用並非透過降低血糖，而是透過其他途徑達成（14）。
高血壓
淫羊藿（Epimedium，Yin Yang Huo）提取物顯示對高血壓大鼠有益。這種草藥具有神經營養作用（促進神經生長）。服用此草藥的大鼠，其盆腔神經節的神經突長度顯著較長，勃起功能亦有所改善（15, 16）。
思覺失調症
抗精神病藥物經常導致思覺失調症患者出現性功能障礙，在男性患者中比例可高達50%（17）。典型的性相關副作用包括勃起及射精障礙（30– 60%的患者）。這些影響往往導致生活質素下降，以及未能依從治療方案。一條常見的中藥方劑「柴胡加龍骨牡蠣湯」在減輕抗精神病藥物引致的性功能障礙方面顯示出可喜的結果，但仍需更嚴謹的研究（17）。
雖然支持以中草藥治療勃起功能障礙的證據日益增加，但重要的是，不要忽略與草藥名稱一同記載下來的知識。
由此可見，不同的草藥被廣泛應用於各種病症。重要的是要明白，不同草藥適用於哪類情況，並不一定與現今的疾病名稱相對應。
