Foot sprains are usually associated with foot pronation (a flat foot). It is can involve subacute or chronic sprains of the tarsal ligaments.

Causes of foot sprain

  • an abnormal foot subjected to abnormal stresses,
  • a normal foot subjected to abnormal stresses,
  • an abnormal foot, subjected to normal stresses, over an abnormal time.

It is most commonly associated with a pronated foot, therefore associated with hypermobility of the intertarsal joints, with capsule-ligamentous sprains, plantar fasciitis, and painful spasm of intrinsic muscles of the foot.

Symptoms of foot sprains include:

  • aching in the feet, aggravated by walking and standing,
  • aching in the calves (due to muscle spasms of tibialis anterior & posterior and peroneus longus muscles).

Treatments for foot sprains include:

  • Decreasing the time spent walking or standing,
  • Orthotic device,
  • Treat inflammation (ice, ultrasound, anti-inflammatory medications),
  • Soft tissue techniques, massage.

Alternatively, there is limited free parking available in the underground carpark at South Melbourne Central on Cecil Street. Please be aware this carpark is a 5-7-minute walk from the clinic.

Simply catch the No. 12 Tram and get off at Stop 12 (York Street/Clarendon Street). Walk down York St for 2 minutes until you reach our clinic entrance. Alternatively, you can catch No. 58 and get off at Stop 117 (York Street). Walk up York St for 4 minutes until you reach our clinic entrance.
