Foot sprains are usually associated with foot pronation (a flat foot). It is can involve subacute or chronic sprains of the tarsal ligaments.
Causes of foot sprain
- an abnormal foot subjected to abnormal stresses,
- a normal foot subjected to abnormal stresses,
- an abnormal foot, subjected to normal stresses, over an abnormal time.
It is most commonly associated with a pronated foot, therefore associated with hypermobility of the intertarsal joints, with capsule-ligamentous sprains, plantar fasciitis, and painful spasm of intrinsic muscles of the foot.
Symptoms of foot sprains include:
- aching in the feet, aggravated by walking and standing,
- aching in the calves (due to muscle spasms of tibialis anterior & posterior and peroneus longus muscles).
Treatments for foot sprains include:
- Decreasing the time spent walking or standing,
- Orthotic device,
- Treat inflammation (ice, ultrasound, anti-inflammatory medications),
- Soft tissue techniques, massage.
