How does acupuncture help paediatric conditions?
Aims to support development
Could potentially strengthen neural pathways for language and motor skills.
May boost immunity
Aims to work in conjunction with the central nervous system to encourage the release of proteins, hormones, and brain chemicals that regulate bodily systems.
Could enhance adjunct therapies
May complement the effectiveness of other treatments and facilitate an improved response.

Developmental delay occurs when a child does not achieve developmental milestones. And can be further categorised based on the significance of the delay.
In developmental disorders, development does not follow the normal pattern. Variants include:
- ‘Bottom shuffling’ instead of crawling
- Lack of muscle tone
- Acquiring language skills late
- Multiple causes or illnesses can contribute to developmental delay. Which requires a multi-factorial approach.
Chinese Medicine is able to concurrently address the cause and the manifesting symptoms of the delay.
“We also observed that acupuncture had a specific effect on brain regions relevant to cognitive activity”

Approximately two thirds of pediatric allergic rhinitis patients are treated with Chinese Medicine in Taiwan and China.
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever is characterised by sneezing, runny nose, blocked nose and itchy nose.
Symptomatic relief medications are associated with some side effects such as blood nose, dry nose and drowsiness. Growth can also be hindered with the use of corticosteroids.
Chinese Medicine provides a safe and effective method of combating the symptoms and also decreasing the body's sensitivity to allergens.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Decreasing IgE levels; the antibody that causes an allergic reaction
- Decreasing recurrence rate
- Providing symptomatic relief
“The analysis showed that Chinese Herbal Medicine could effectively decrease IgE levels compared with the control group”

Asthma is a common inflammatory disease of the airways.
Characterised by increasing breathlessness, cough, wheezing, chest tightness and progressive decrease in lung function.
Inhaled corticosteroids are the main treatments for asthma which have undesirable side effects such as inhibiting growth.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Improving lung function as measured by lung function parameters such as peak expiratory flow
- Reducing inflammation in the airways
- Reducing the dosage of steroids
“Chinese Herbal Medicine formula significantly improved the asthma symptoms (shortness of breath, wheeze, chest tightness, and cough) compared with placebo after 4-day and 7-day treatment”

Osgood-Schlatter syndrome is a common cause of knee pain in children, in particular active and growing children.
It presents with local pain and tenderness over the shin.
Pain due to Osgood-Schlatter syndrome usually resolves spontaneously over a few weeks or months. However in some cases the pain does not resolve until the end of the growth spurt.
Chinese Medicine is able to manage the pain in order for normal activity to resume, particularly during childhood when playing sports and activities are very prevalent.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Decreasing pain intensity
- Reducing the frequency of pain
- Reducing the need to take pain medication

PANS (Paediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndromes) is inflammation of the brain that can have infectious and non-infectious triggers.
According to the American Academy of Paediatrics it is estimated at least 1 in 100 US school children has PANS. Many of these children are misdiagnosed, or are just simply missed all together.
PANS is more complex than just a mental health disorder. PANS can have an immune mediated inflammatory aspect on the brain as well as a bacterial factor.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Reducing neuro-inflammation
- Regulating the gut-brain connection
- Supporting gut microbiome

Eczema is a chronically relapsing inflammatory skin condition, often found in children.
There are many complex risk factors such as irritants, contact allergens, food, inhaled allergens, stress or infection.
Beyond the immediate symptoms of itching, redness and inflammation. Eczema can lead to skin infections and an abnormal skin barrier.
Chinese Medicine not only addresses the presenting symptoms on the skin, but also looks at the child's constitutional immunity. In this way, Chinese Medicine has a long term outlook for preventing relapses.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Decreasing flare ups and relapses
- Targeting immune cells and inflammatory cells
- Reducing reliance on corticosteroids
“The total amount of topical corticosteroid used was also significantly reduced by one-third in the PentaHerbs (Chinese Herbal Medicine) group”

Hives is also known as urticaria or nettle rash.
It can be recurring and have multiple triggers. Which makes it difficult to manage.
Antihistamines are the common treatment of hives. However in children, side effects are likely to occur from antihistamine use.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Managing inflammatory response
- Regulating the immune system
- Reducing flare up intensity and frequency
“Chinese Herbal Medicine helps patients reduce taking western medicines such as antihistamines, and we hypothesize that Chinese Herbal Medicine improves symptoms of chronic urticaria by the gastrointestinal protective activity and anti-oxidative/depressive effect”

Epilepsy is a disorder in which the brain activity becomes abnormal resulting in seizures, periods of unusual behaviour and sometimes a loss of awareness.
The majority of epilepsy sufferers will go into remission, but up to 30% continue to have seizures despite treatment with adequate doses of antiepileptic drugs.
Chinese Medicine provides an alternative non-invasive and drug-free approach to epilepsy.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Releasing brain chemicals that has an inhibitory effect
- Regulating the nervous system
- Controls inflammation pre and post seizures
“A large number of clinical studies have demonstrated that acupuncture produces favorable effects on varied types of epilepsy such as absence seizure, febrile convulsion, generalized clonic-tonic seizure, and even status epilepticus”

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common cognitive and behavioral disorder diagnosed during childhood, and often continues into adolescence and adulthood.
It is characterized by deficient attention and problem solving, along with hyperactivity and impulsiveness, coexisting with anxiety, depression, and antisocial behavior.
Structural abnormalities in the brain affecting neural development, cell energy and neural cell death are identified by neuroimaging.
The side effects and restricted clinical application of psychostimulant drugs prompts the use of a safe and effective alternative therapy.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Improving learning, memory and cognition
- Regulating brain activity
- Improving metabolism of the brain

The frequency of neurosis in children is on the rise with growing intensive stressful factors.
Tourettes are a manifestation of neurosis in children characterised by involuntary movements called tics, such as:
- Eye blinking
- Head jerking
- Unusual movement of the limbs
Several treatments exist for tourettes and tics, including drugs, botox injections, behaviour therapy and deep brain stimulation surgery.
Chinese Medicine has treated tourettes and tics since before it was coined tourettes and tics in Western medicine.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Regulating the nervous system
- Reducing associated symptoms such as headaches, hyperactivity, fatigue and attention deficit
- Regulating neurotransmitters in the brain
“The results of the study give evidence of the higher effectiveness of the treatment of the children suffering from neurotic ticks with the application of acupuncture therapy compared with the conventional approach” (1)
