Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease.
It is a form of motor neuron disease and characterised by degeneration of the motor nerves.
It leads to severe limb disability and eventually results in respiratory failure, which is the main cause of death due to ALS.
The quality of life of patients with ALS is significantly impacted as they rapidly lose their motor function because of muscle weakness and eventually paralysis.
There are no effective western medicine treatments to date.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Improving physical activity
- Improving muscle atrophy
- Maintaining respiratory function
“Traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture, as part of supplemental and alternative therapies, has a significant effect on the treatment of ALS. It could improve clinical symptoms such as the muscle weakness and ameliorate the quality of life of patients”

Cerebral palsy is the disturbance of the developing fetal or infant brain that causes motor disorders.
It is often accompanied with a deficit in sensation and perception, impaired cognition, communication difficulties, epilepsy and musculoskeletal problems.
Conventional treatment for children with cerebral palsy is made up of multi-modality rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
Chinese Medicine is able to facilitate the rehabilitation process.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Relieving spasticity via antispasmodic mechanisms of acupuncture
- Improving the blood supply of affected brain region
- Activating specific motor function areas of the brain
“Based on fMRI studies, scalp acupuncture has also been shown to have effects on movement regulation” (3)

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a paralytic nerve disease mainly caused by a viral infection.
It results in extensive inflammatory damage of the peripheral nervous system.
There are no specific treatments for Guillain-Barre Syndrome and many patients experience residual symptoms such as fatigue, pain, anxiety and recurrence.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Reducing pain
- Increasing muscle strength
- Improving nerve conduction function as measured by electrophysiological examination
“When combined with TCM administration, the Guillain-Barre Syndrome treatment could acquire better outcomes”

Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disorder characterised by vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, pressure sensation in the ear and often accompanied by nausea.
It has debilitating effects on quality of life making sufferers unable to maintain normal posture without feeling vertigo and nausea.
Not only are there physical symptoms but Meniere’s disease often involves anxiety and depression.
There remains no gold standard treatment for Meniere’s disease and individualised treatments are required.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Controlling vertigo
- Improving quality of life
- Managing triggers such as psychological factors
“The analysis results revealed a positive effect in controlling the vertigo”

There are many causes that contribute to deficits in sensory, motor and visceral function from childhood to senior years.
Including developmental disorders such as autism and cerebral palsy, autoimmune disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis and Myasthenia Gravis and other conditions such as Parkinsons and stroke.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Reducing spasticity
- Regulating areas on the brain responsible for motor function as measured by fMRI
- Regulating the nervous system to modulate organ functions
“Acupuncture has therapeutic potential for helping improve limb movement function and decreasing the severity of spasticity”

Neuropathy or nerve pain is when there is direct damage or irritation to a nerve.
It is likely to be nerve pain if it feels like burning, stabbing, tingly, shooting or numb.
There can be a range of causes for nerve pain such as chemotherapy, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, disc herniations and even as a side effect of some drugs.
And oftentimes there is no obvious cause.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Stimulating damaged nerve fibres
- Regulating the central nervous system to moderate the pain centres of the brain
- Enabling the body’s pain inhibitory pathways
“Acupuncture is effective in diabetic neuropathy, Bell's palsy, and carpel tunnel syndrome, under the conditions of the included studies”(2)

When the signalling system such as the brain, spinal cord or nerves is damaged, the message doesn’t get to the muscles and as a result, paralysis occurs.
The disruption in signalling can be sudden or gradual.
The most common causes of paralysis include stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, ALS and many others.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Improving limb motor performance
- Enhancing motor relearning in limbs
- Modulating functions of cognition, motor and perception to assist with movement of the body

Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs.
It is more prominent when resting, at night during bedtime and causes urges and involuntary movements of the legs.
Pharmacological drugs used to treat restless leg syndrome include opioids, anti-anxiety medications and anticonvulsant medications.
Many non-pharmacological methods are also effective in managing restless leg syndrome.
Chinese Medicine assists by:
- Providing neuroprotection of dopamine neurons
- Improving sleep
- Modulating reflex responses
“The total effective rate was significantly higher in the acupuncture group of patients

The phenomenon of neuroplasticity suggests the potential for nerves to regrow at a faster rate.
Nerves regrow faster according to neuroplasticity phenomenon
Initial treatments may yield quicker results; beyond this period, nerve regrowth might occur at a slower pace.
You experience faster results in this window, after this time nerves regrow slower
Acupuncture, combined with specific movements, can influence neural pathways
Acupuncture with movement activates neural pathways
